Whale Watching

The Azores are home to one third of the world’s whale and dolphin species. More than 20 different types of cetaceans, including resident and migratory, common and rare species, can be spotted in the archipelago’s waters, making the Azores one of the world’s most important whale sanctuaries and an exceptional year-round destination for whale watching.

Pico Island pioneered whale-watching activities in the Azores. In addition to its strong whaling heritage, the island’s waters are frequented by a remarkable variety of cetaceans, many of which can often be seen close to its coastline.
